Ferris Bueller's Day Off

This weekend, we watched (for the first time actually) this 80's classic featuring a very young Matthew Broderick. This definitely is one of the funniest movies I've seen in quite some time. While loaded with classic slapstick scenes, it's also packed with a more refined sense of humor and existential problems of young adolescents. I can only highly recommend it!

Futurama - Into The Wild Green Yonder

Yesterday I watched the latest (and for now last) Futurama movie, Into the Wild Green Yonder. The other 3 movies that have been reviewed on this blog were at times a bit disappointing, the jokes flat but still good enough to be enjoyed. This last addition however stands out as being better, funnier, full of pseudoscientific jokes. Go out and watch it! ... now I will go back to the money shower...

Paranoid Buttons

Last weekend was a good weekend. I went to see Line in Brussels and made it there without major train perturbations (if you don't consider the woman next to me dislocating her knee in an utterly painful way as a perturbation). Furthermore, I got to see two very good movies, considering what I missed so far on Chris' list. First off was Paranoid Park, the story of a 16ish boy/skater who struggles through major an minor catastrophes of life, reminding me somewhat of the boy portrayed in Nick Hornsby's book Slam. Then I also finally saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which just has to be the best movie to come out last year and probably needs no further description. If you haven't seen them, do so!

W

Yesterday I watched "W" by Oliver Stone on TV, because I thought nothing better was on... I was probably wrong. What's up with that movie? It's just one of the worst I've seen in some time! Did I just miss the point or what? Bad actors, worse script... nothing decent about it...

Cold reading btw is the practice used by "psychics" to talk to ghosts and read your mind, and by horoscopes in your daily magazines. See it here.

How to get ahead in advertising

Watched this brilliantly cynical movie last weekend, and I can warmly recommend it. Although the story is a bit weird, the movie touches the thin line between sanity and insanity in a very successful but completely stressed advertisement yuppie.

Movie Mondays II

Here are the pics from our second Movie Monday. There was so much love, actually... And the pizza was fine too (no we didn't eat the dog... we'll spare him for hot dog night. And don't worry if you didn't get that joke).

Movies

Been awfully quiet about the movies I've seen lately, so here's somewhat of an overview:

  • Hancock: Usually not really my type of movie, I must say that I liked the idea. There were many stupid scenes that did not really impress me (hole in the trailor roof...) but the rest was mostly kind of funny. The idea of an absolute anti-hero appealed to me, however this being hollywood, there had to be a moral after-taste crawling up behind it... Overall quite good, especially on blu-ray...
  • Son of Rambow: I had already seen the beginning in an aeroplane, but somehow managed to skip to the end after 2 minutes or so, thereby I wanted to wait some more before watching it again. Absolutely magnificent movie, like the 80s setting, liked the theme, plot, characters and actors... what more is there to add?
  • Futurama: Bender's Game: Last in the Futurama series representing the revival of the cancelled show in form of DVD releases. Being a huge Futurama fan, I kind of liked having new episodes, however this is not really worth the pain... Worse than the first two movie releases, badly drawn (did they fire the Korean drawing company or what?), plot amusing at times but definetely lacking the Futurama cleverness. The format is simply not a good fit for the Futurama series, they should have stayed with an traditional episode length...
  • Wall-E: Fantastic, not only the grafics but also the story. Probably a movie that you can watch with anybody and have a good laugh.
  • Quantum of Solace: Not impressed. I like Daniel Craig, but what is it with these James Bond plots lately (i.e. for the past 10 years). Where's the humor? Where are the evil mad men vilans? Where are straight-forward plots? Sure there's lots of action and explosions. But that's about it. No cool tricks, no cool characters, no .... no zap... Whatever you like to call it. I liked Casino Royale. The last Bond I somewhat enjoyed before was Goldeneye, but probably only because of the N64 game... I just don't get why these stories have to be so convoluted, twisted, complicated... Or am I simply too stupid for these movies?

Futurama - The Beast with a Billion Backs

The latest Futurama DVD was released a couple of days ago, and even as I'm somewhat stressed, I try to write a short note about it. My overall rating is somewhere above average, but not skyrocketing. Bender's Big Score was somewhat better, but here you can really tell that the 90 min format is not the right choice for Futurama. Story is okay, the plot is a bit streched. Anyhow, it has its moments and I had a couple of good pre vacation departure laughs, which was just what I needed.
